The fundamental technology of the 21st century
Nanobiotechnology is a very new field of research and works with a strong interdisciplinary orientation. It combines physical laws, chemical processes and biological principles on the nanoscale. The certificate programme is unique in the whole of Germany.
The English-language distance learning programme is aimed at professionals in the fields of engineering, natural sciences, medicine and pharmacy who wish to acquire knowledge of nanostructuretechnology and biotechnology.
Objective and degree
The Certificate programme provides the participants with well-founded theoretical knowledge and practical qualifications in the field of nanobiotechnology.
Graduates are awarded a diploma from the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern as well as a university certificate.
The Certificate programme comprises eight compulsory modules that focus on, for example
- Molecular biology,
- Quantum physics,
- Nanostructures (for example scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy),
- Nanomotors, nanosensors and nanoparticles,
- Diagnostics and therapeutics.
The application is open to persons with a first degree in a discipline related to engineering, natural sciences, pharmaceuticals or medicine.
- Evidence of knowledge
Since the programme is taught in English, sufficient evidence of English language skills must be provided. More information can be found in the examination regulations.
Schedule and organisation
The Certificate programme in Nanobiotechnology has a standard period of study of two semesters (part-time). Mandatory on-campus phases in Kaiserslautern or Hanover take place once per semester over a (long) weekend. The written module examinations are completed during mandatory on-campus phases.
A weekly commitment of around 20 hours is required to study the material, complete the mail-in exercises and take the examinations (amongst others).
At a glance
At the moment, the tuition fees are EUR 820 per semester as well as the social contribution of currently EUR 102 per semester. The tuition fees do not include travel and accommodation expenses or meal allowances during the on-campus phases. Only the social contribution is charged in the first and second semester after the end of the standard period of study. Tuition fees are reduced to 30 percent of the original fee as of the third semester exceeding the standard period of study. The tuition fees are exempted from German VAT and may be tax-deductible if the legal requirements are fulfilled. An installment payment request is possible.

The Certificate programme's scientific director is Prof. Dr. Christiane Ziegler (TU Kaiserslautern). The Nanobiotechnology programme is taught in cooperation with the Institute of Technical Chemistry at the University of Hanover. The programme is also a member of the mint.online education alliance.
The Certificate programme has undergone an internal quality assurance process within the TU Kaiserslautern's system accreditation.
Distance learning programmes are basically defined by the fact that students do not physically attend the institution of higher education, instead the institution of higher education comes to them. Both programme organisation and the didactically prepared learning materials are based on the concept of independent learning: the learners are supported in taking personal responsibility for their own learning process by a teaching-learning arrangement that consists of a combination of self-learning materials, on-campus phases and online-based interactions in the online campus. Each programme has an own virtual learning environment within the online campus that accompanies the students for the duration of their course. During the on-campus phases, the students have the opportunity to consolidate and substantiate the self-taught content in the context of practical classes and group work and to further discuss their acquired skills and knowledge in consideration of current issues.
